Discover Stuart, Florida, the Treasure Coast’s Hidden Diving Gem
Historic wrecks, vibrant reefs, drift diving, and rich marine life. Stuart’s waters are full of surprises and we are here to show you every one of them.
Why Stuart, Florida
Florida’s Treasure Coast Has Treasure Worth Diving For
Stuart, Florida sits at the heart of the Treasure Coast, and it more than lives up to the name. Tucked between Jupiter to the south and Fort Pierce to the north, Stuart offers a remarkable and often overlooked dive destination that rewards those who take the time to explore it. The Gulf Stream runs close to the coastline here, bringing warm, clear water, an abundance of marine life, and some of the best drift diving conditions on Florida’s east coast.
Stuart’s diving has something genuinely unique to offer, a blend of natural reef, thriving artificial reef, and historic shipwrecks that no other single stretch of the Treasure Coast can match. The most famous of these is the USS Rankin, a massive 459-foot attack cargo ship sunk in 1988 that now rests on the seafloor and teems with Goliath Grouper, sharks, and moray eels. It is one of the most impressive wreck dives in all of Florida.
Whether you are drawn by the history of the wrecks, the color of the natural reefs, or the thrill of drifting along with the Gulf Stream as marine life sweeps by on all sides, Stuart delivers an experience that feels both accessible and extraordinary.
Reefs and Wrecks
From Shallow Reefs to Deep Historic Wrecks
One of Stuart’s greatest strengths is the sheer variety of its diving. At the shallow end, Bathtub Reef Beach offers an incredible snorkel and introductory dive experience in calm, protected waters where over 500 marine species have been documented. It is a wonderful spot for newer divers and families, with sea turtles, tropical fish, and gentle rays gliding through a natural reef formed by sabellariid worms.
For more experienced divers, Stuart’s offshore reefs and wrecks open up a whole different world. The Ana Cecilia wreck, the Governor’s River Walk reef complex, and the deep-water USS Rankin all offer compelling dives at varying levels of difficulty. The coral-encrusted ledges along Martin County’s coastline attract large game fish, sea turtles resting in the crevices, and the occasional passing shark.
And if lobster is on your mind, Stuart is one of the best places in Florida to find them. The artificial reefs along the Treasure Coast are loaded with spiny lobster, and sport lobster season draws divers from all over the state every summer.
